give neptune his due

Neglect the God of the Oceans at your peril…

Crossing the line

The ceremony of ‘Crossing the line’ or ‘The Order of Neptune’ dates back some 400 years and is performed on sailors crossing the Equator for the first time.

When a ship crosses the Equator, King Neptune comes on board to assert his authority over the oceans and to ensure that all inexperienced sailors pay proper homage to the God of the Sea.

Give Neptune his due…

There is an ancient tradition that Neptune needs to be appeased both before and during long ocean voyages with a measure of rum poured directly into the sea.

“Ride the great waves boys And as land hoves in view Break open the rum casks Give Neptune his due.”
